More than 40% of the world's population depends on water originating on the Tibetan Plateau. In an effort to manage these ecosystems, the Chinese government has adopted the policy of poisoning an endemic mammal, the Plateau Pika, resulting in massive losses of biodiversity (90%+) as well as increased flooding and drought conditions downstream.
